MINI Cooper Gets Your Motor Running – but It’s a No-Go for Thieves

Here’s another reason you should consider the fun-to-drive MINI Cooper: thieves don’t steal them as often as some other vehicles. The 2025 MINI Cooper on a list published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute (IIHS-HLDI) of “Least-Stolen Vehicles” in 2024. Happily, no MINI models made the list of “Most-Stolen Vehicles.”

Schomp MINI has long touted our vehicle’s flagship model. There are lots of reasons to love MINI Coopers. Now we have just one more: thieves don’t seem to want MINIs. But they sure do like to steal other vehicles.

Here is the vehicle theft data: Colorado is #3 among states for vehicle theft, with 430.0 stolen vehicles per 100,000 people, or 25,378 total vehicles stolen. That was down from the previous count, and overall, vehicle thefts are declining, but you’re not going to care about that if your car is the one that went missing.

Locked Garages and Good Lighting

Want to keep your vehicle out of harm’s way? Roads and streets and parking lots and garages are thieves’ favored targets of opportunity. They also are happiest working the late shift, focusing on hours late in the afternoon until the early morning to make mischief: 8 p.m. to Midnight, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Midnight to 4 a.m. And since cities are more car-centric, Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Colorado Springs and Westminster are favored locations for theft.

Most stolen vehicles (86%) come back to their owners, but not in great condition. They need a lot of repairs and cleaning and often have been dismantled, according to the Colorado Auto Theft Authority.

You Can Thwart the Thieves

Get out ahead of theft attempts with some easy-to-implement anti-theft tips:

  • Park in a well-lit area
  • Never leave your MINI unlocked - and never leave it running unattended.
  • Keep all valuables hidden - even loose change.
  • Add an extra layer of security with an alarm that sounds the horn/flashes the lights, or a steering-wheel lock and systems that prevent your MINI from being hotwired.
  • Have a vehicle tracker, either through GPS or one of the locator apps for your smart phone.

The MINI Cooper is mighty in so many ways – we love to talk style, handling and attitude, but being among the least-stolen vehicles is certainly worth adding to the list. A Schomp MINI client advisor can help you configure the best MINI for your lifestyle.
