Whether you want an adventure before the New Year or after it begins next week, we’ve put together a list of winter, mountain activities that will deliver that adventure you’re looking for. For a family with younger kids, or possibly less adventurous, there are still plenty of activities to do without getting to far into the snow and mountains. Most ski towns have ice skating, but Beaver Creek has a charming rink located in Beaver Creek Village, called Black Family Ice Rink. It opens at noon daily, so you can get a few laps in before the sun goes down around 5:00 p.m. But the skating lasts until 9:00 p.m., giving you plenty of time to enjoy the lit rink with loved ones. There’s a $5 fee if you bring your own skates, $8 fee with skate rentals for everyone under 12, and a $14 admission for 13 and older with rentals.

If you haven’t been snowmobiling in the outskirts of Colorado terrain yet, you’re missing out on what could be the best adventure of your life. Grand Adventures leads a handful of tours that take place throughout Colorado, but we suggest the one in Winter Park. The rentals are two hours, whether you have a guide accompany you for first-timers or you go it alone with your own crew. You can get up to about 12,000 feet with views of the entire Winter Park Ski area and the Fraser Valley. This tour leaves from Winter Park Hotel. Copper Mountain hosts one of the best tubing hills in the state, with four lanes to get some speed, catch some air, and enjoy the long run out. This tubing hill provides the tube and lays out the run for you, so all you have to do it show up, pay the one-hour fee, and have some fun. If you reserve online, you can save 20%, costing $25.60 per hour, per person.

If you’ve always wanted to experience the extreme winter activities in Colorado, look no further than ice climbing. It’s an experience not many do yearly, but most want to experience at least once in their life. Vail is the perfect landscape to do so and Apex Mountain School offers great rates whether it’s just you or five others in your group. The trip is about 6-7 hours of climbing and setting up altogether.

For a fun weekend with the family that won’t cost you any fees, head to Breckenridge where one of the largest and most popular sledding hills resides. There isn’t a fee for this hill, so bring your own sleds and get ready to soar down the hill. It’s located at the south end of High Street and adjacent to Breckenridge Elementary School.
